French Press Coffee Maker
The French press coffee maker is a very popular coffee maker choice among coffee lovers, particularly those who understand how a coffee filter prevents the essential oils from reaching the coffee pot and ultimately preventing the coffee from reaching its flavor potential. French coffee makers are usually made of glass which is breakable even though it is usually encased in metal to prevent cracking. However, the glass French press is breakable and the best alternative is an unbreakable model.
The answer to this is the stainless steel French press. This French press is not only fully functional but also aesthetically enhancing to any kitchen. Stainless steel French press models are made of double walled stainless steel that is heavy gauged. These models are insulated on the outside to keep the beverage heated during the brewing or steeping process. In a stainless steel French press every part is made from stainless steel, not just the outer casing.
This type of French press coffee maker will last for many years longer than a traditional glass or plastic model. The plunger is made of stainless steel with a stainless steel mesh filter making it a truly complete stainless steel model French press.
Glass models are the traditional types of French press models and the first to be invented. These are glass cylindrical tubes with a glass plunger. The outer casing is sometimes covered with a metal type cage to protect the glass from breakage. However, there is no way to prevent breakage from occurring with a glass model even though it is in a cage. Glass models do not hold heat as well as the stainless steel models even though they are the most popular models on the market.
The French press is also available in a heavy duty plastic-type material. This polymer is created specifically for use with hot beverages and will not break like the glass models will; however, the plastic models are not as decorative as the stainless steel models. The advantage over stainless steel is simply the ability to see through the pot whereas with stainless steel it is impossible to see inside without looking downwards with the lid off.
Many people have noted that there are flavor differences that are apparent with each type of French press. The plastic French press is said to produce a totally different flavor of coffee. This could be due to the chemicals used in making plastic. The stainless steel versions are said to alter the flavor slightly though not unfavorably; however, it is something that must be taken into consideration when deciding. The glass French press has the least effect on flavor altering the coffee practically none and leaving simply the pure coffee flavor to be enjoyed.
Each type of French press has its pros and its cons, each of which should be taken into consideration when purchasing a French press for home use or to give as a gift. Pricing is different with each version and is usually a part of the decision making process as well. All three French press materials are excellent choices that make a great tasting cup of coffee.
